Grandma Ople’s Apple Pie

Ingredients:

  • 1 recipe pastry for a 9-inch double crust pie
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 8 Granny Smith apples – peeled, cored and sliced

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Line the bottom and sides of a 9-inch pie dish with one rolled-out pastry crust.
  3. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour to form a paste. Add water, white sugar, and brown sugar, and bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and let the mixture simmer.
  4. Place the bottom crust in your pie dish. Fill with sliced apples, mounded slightly. Cover with a lattice or full crust, and trim and seal the edges. Brush the crust with an egg wash if desired.
  5. Pour the sugar and butter mixture over the top crust, coating it evenly.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven. Reduce the temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes, until apples are soft.
  7. Allow the pie to cool before serving. Enjoy Grandma Ople’s famous Apple Pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream on top!
  8. This recipe has been cherished by many for its rich, caramelized flavor and tender apple filling. It’s perfect for any occasion, from family dinners to holiday gatherings.
