Sesame Tofu & Broccoli

Ingredients:

For the Sesame Tofu:

  • 1 block (14-16 ounces) extra-firm tofu, drained and pressed
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooking oil for frying

For the Broccoli:

  • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Serving:

  • Cooked rice
  • Sliced green onions (optional)
  • Red pepper flakes (optional)

Directions:

Prepare the Tofu:

  1. Drain the tofu and place it between two clean kitchen towels or paper towels.
  2. Press the tofu by placing a heavy object (like a skillet or cans of food) on top for about 20-30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  3. Once pressed, cut the tofu into cubes or rectangles.

Marinate the Tofu:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, cornstarch, honey or maple syrup, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame seeds, salt, and pepper.
  2. Add the tofu cubes to the marinade and gently toss to coat.
  3. Let the tofu marinate for at least 15-20 minutes, or up to overnight in the refrigerator.

Cook the Tofu:

  1. Heat a tablespoon of cooking oil in a large skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the marinated tofu cubes to the skillet in a single layer, reserving any excess marinade.
  3. Cook the tofu for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Pour any remaining marinade into the skillet and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens and coats the tofu.
  5. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set aside.

Prepare the Broccoli:

  1. In the same skillet, add a little more oil if needed.
  2. Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  3. Add broccoli florets to the skillet along with soy sauce, sesame oil, water, salt, and pepper.
  4. Stir well to coat the broccoli in the sauce.
  5. Cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the broccoli is tender but still crisp.

Serve:

  1. Serve the sesame tofu and broccoli over cooked rice.
  2. Garnish with sliced green onions and red pepper flakes if desired.
  3. Enjoy your delicious Sesame Tofu & Broccoli!
