homemade cinnamon rolls

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 large egg

For the filling:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

For the icing:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, granulated sugar, salt, and yeast. Set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, heat the milk, water, and butter until warm (about 120-130°F or 50-55°C). The butter doesn’t need to melt completely.
  3. Add the warm milk mixture to the dry ingredients, along with the egg. Mix until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. You may not need to use all of the flour.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 3-5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  6. Roll the dough into a 12×9-inch rectangle.
  7. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  8. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle the mixture over the buttered dough.
  9. Starting from one of the long edges, roll the dough up tightly into a log.
  10. Use a sharp knife to cut the log into 12 equal-sized rolls.
  11. Place the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  12. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  13. Once the rolls have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  14. While the rolls are baking, prepare the icing by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk or cream, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  15. Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly before drizzling with the icing.
  16. Serve the cinnamon rolls warm and enjoy!
  17. These quick cinnamon rolls are perfect for a weekend breakfast or brunch, and they’re sure to become a family favorite!
